Finalists of Open Fours Determined

The finalists in the 2022/23 Open Fours Championship at Tuross Head Bowling Club have been determined after two very close semi-finals were fought out on Saturday November 19.
Defending Champions Des Jackson, Chris Codington, Col Fletcher and Marcel Kors had the edge in the early stages of their clash with Ben Hewison, Dennis Gallacher, Jonathan Green and Doug Williams in a very tight encounter.  However, by the 13th end Williams had managed to draw level at 8 all.  Remarkably, at this stage 10 of the ends were decided by one shot!

Kors picked up the biggest score of the game when his side scored 4 shots on the 14th end to grab the biggest lead of the match.  On the back of some outstanding lead bowls by Hewison, Williams struck back quickly to hit the front for the first time at 13 – 12 after 16 ends.  The close tussle continued with the sides locked up at 14 all with two ends to play.

Hewison again played the critical bowls on the last two ends enabling his side to sneak home 17 – 14 in a very even match.

Doreen and John Monks and Rita and Noel Downie played Lorraine Wake, Bill Burch, Sue Fahey and Carol Williams in another engrossing encounter.  Low scores were again the order of the day with the first 7 ends all being decided by a single shot!  At this stage Williams had a slender lead of 4 – 3.

The next end proved to be critical.  Monks was able to pick up 5 shots to go to the front 8 – 4.  His side then consolidated their advantage by winning the next three ends.  By the 12th end they had set up a commanding lead of 15 – 4.

Williams was not to be denied.  Her side fought back bravely.  They won 6 of the remaining 9 ends with Burch and Williams leading the way.  However, they could not pick up the big score they needed to really bridge the gap.  Monks’ side was able to minimise the damage with some good defensive bowls. Monks moved into the final with a 19 – 12 win but the score did not reflect the tightness of the play – 15 of the 21 ends were decided by a single shot!

The Final of the Championship will be played on Saturday November 26 stating at 10 am.  At the same time Tuross will be hosting preliminary rounds of the Bowls NSW Rookies Open Pairs.  A couple of local sides are entered in this event.  There will be some great bowling action on display with all players benefiting from the outstanding condition of the greens.
